BIRTH CONTROL OPTIONS
COMBINED ORAL CONTRACEPTIVE
These pills have a combination of estrogen and progestin. Two hormones that work together to stop the ovaries from releasing an egg. Lots of added benefits include acne control, and period control.
PROGESTIN-ONLY PILL (THE MINI-PILL)
This is a safe pill option for women who cannot take estrogen for medical reasons.
NUVARING (THE RING)
A combination of estrogen and progestin but delivered by a different route. The Nuvaring is placed inside the vagina and left there for 3 weeks. At the end of 3 weeks you take it out for 1 week which is when you will bleed. Great for people who have problems remembering to take pills.
EVRA (THE PATCH)
A combination of estrogen and progestin but the delivery method is by a sticky patch placed on your skin. The patch is replaced weekly for 3 weeks then 1 week without a patch which is when you'll bleed. Another great option for those who have problems remembering the pill
DEPO-PROVERA (THE SHOT)
This option only contains progestin, so it is a safe option for those who cannot take estrogen. It is an injection in the arm every 12 weeks.
OTHERS
Condoms, fertility awareness and diaphragms are among the other options. All of which can be further discussed at your appointment.
